3D Design

Image
This project was done using watercolor paper, markers, a sharpie, and a scissors. First we traced different shapes into the paper and cut those out. Next we traced all the edges with a black sharpie. After that we started by coloring the bases in using out own personal style. After those were done we then started coloring the other pieces trying to mimic Jean Dubuffet's style. Next, we cut slits into the paper to fit them together and create the sculpture.  Extension Activity: One thing that could be done with this project is to use it to create a story problem or a game. This could be done in a middle school math room where each piece is either a clue, step, or piece of the answer. Students would then have to assemble it correctly to figure out the answer.

Clay

Image
The project was creating a pinch pot that looks like an apple. First, we wedged and threw the clay to get out all of the air bubbles so the clay would set nice. After that, we rolled them into balls and took out a small chunk to save for later. We then started by creating a bowl shape and pinching the edges together to create the apple shape as well as used a small wooden tool to create the shape of the seeds.. Then we made a stem and leaf to go on the apple. After that we used some water to bond the stem and leaf to the apple. We had to score the pieces and the apple for this to work. After all of that we were able to start painting. I did a few coats of the red and white to get it even. Then I painted the leaf green and mixed colors to create the brown color for the stem and seeds. The clay then sat and dried. Extension Activity: There are so many options for this sort of project. One that comes to mind is for a math class. Students could create different things and then analyze th

Weaving - Crafts

Image
This weaving project did not take many tools. It only used the cup, the string, and a scissors. First we tied a knot around one of the cut pieces of the cup and then we did an over/under pattern to create the weaved effect/look. I found a strategy the worked well for me and I was able to do this project very simply. Since I was doing good in the process I decided to change the color that I was working with by tying the other color to the one that is currently being used. To finish off the project we wrapped the string to the opposite side of the cup that the string was at and tied a knot.  Extension Activity: Doing something like this project would be a good way for students to experience some of the people in different times/cultures/nations did or do. Doing this in a geography course would be a great way to give them first hand experience of these things.

Printmaking

Image
For print making the necessary tools are the brayer, ink, a piece of paper, a styrofoam sheet, and construction paper. First, we sketched out a design of the season on the paper. Next, we traced that into the sytrofoam piece a couple times to create the indents so the brayer does not disperse ink there. After that we went to the brayer and stared rolling the ink and then took the syrofoam piece and placed it on the construction paper to transfer the image. After we did it once we had the opportunity to do it again. This time I was more careful with how I used the brayer and applied more pressure in the areas that needed it.  This is my piece from the printmaking that turned out best. I spent more time making sure that the edges where covered and applied more pressure in the middle to create an evenly applied layer of ink.  Extension Activity: This would be a really fun project to do for students in an english/language arts class. Students could make a book and do this to create the c

Paper - 2D Design

Image
This project was done to mimic a polaroid picture, but created using different paper elements to create a 2D Design. I chose to create a desert habitat. I added in a cactus, the sun, some rocks, and a snake. I took different pieces of construction paper and layered them to give them some different depth and shape. I then glued down all of those pieces onto the premade picture template. I then wrote down a fact about the habitat that I mimicked.  Extension Activity: Students could do this in a geography/history class to talk about different historical monument's that have helped shaped the world. Students could then do a gallery walk and look at all of the different things that their peers created and learn about their significance.

Painting

Image
The first part of this activity was learning the 6 different watercolor techniques that we would use in out project. The six we learned were gradient work (darker at the top and using more water to drag the paint down making it lighter and the bottom), flat wash (creating an evenly applied layer), crayon resist (a crayon color is under the watercolor and the paint does not cover it making the crayon show through), blotting (taking a paper towel to take off some of the paint), sgraffito (taking the end of the paintbrush and making designs in the  paint), and wet on wet (adding watercolor to paper that already has water on it). The next part of this project was sectioning the paper into four parts. Each part was then used for students to watercolor what they were feeling when a song played. We had to have at least 2 different techniques in the project. The song selection was carried. Some were light and smooth while others were hard and loud.  Extension Activity: This project would be co

Drawing

Image
This drawing was using different art styles such as zentangle and using warm colors on one side and cool on the others. First, a line was drawn diagonally down the paper. Next we drew a sun on one side and a moon on others. We were able to choose what to draw when we thought of the sun and warm colors and I chose to do flowers that contained the zentangle style and color them using warm colors. I also drew birds and made them smaller to give some perspective. On the other side I drew stars to help give the illusion of night. I also include Z's as it reminds me of the night and sleeping. I outlined my moon in black to show that it is dark outside and that the moon stands out against that.  Extension Activity: This would be a fun project to do when students are learning about the different weather patterns. This could be a way for them to record them and identifying the things that they see and what each actually looks like. Students could also be challenged to interpret what each

Van Gogh Collage

Image
This Van Gogh inspired "Starry Night" collage was made using tissue paper, construction paper, gel medium, a white crayon, and a glue stick. The first part of this project was done by taking small pieces of tissue paper and "glued" on using gel medium. Next I cut out my landscape, which is a city building landscape. After that I created the illusion of lights/window on the building using the white crayon. Next, I created the swirls on the tissue paper and glued on the buildings.  Extension Activity: This would be a great activity for students to do in an upper elementary/middle school math class where students would have to replicate building by creating an approximate scale. This could then be used to compare the size of different building and/or other large scale objects.

Hidden Safari

Image
The Hidden Safari project was a creation of an animals that was designed to be hidden behind different strokes to "hide" the outline of the animal. The animal would then be seen using some glasses that are made from a red film. The first step to this process was to trace an animal with a blue pencil. Next, we then took multiple different warm colors and created a bunch of different shapes to cover the animal. After that we put the paper onto a larger piece of construction paper to act as a border. After that we wrote 3 facts about the animal on a notecard and attached it to the art so that people would be able to use those hints to help them figure out the animal. We also created glasses that we from a red film to that we were able to see the blue outline of the animal.  Extension Activity: This project would be a great activity to do if students were studying extinct animals or examining "fossils" that the students create because the element of having to search f
